St. Mark's Choristers
How important is music in lives of our children?
Music is associated with our earliest memories and experiences throughout our lives. It definitely has an emotional impact. Almost no one is unaffected by its power on us and our mood. We know that music affects children's learning abilities. It is known that music is linked to improved math, memory and reading skills. When children are creative and make up their own rhymes and songs, they are also building their knowledge of words and sounds. They are building the connections in the brain. All music matters, whether they hear it or create it.
St. Mark's Choristers (grades 2 to 7, ages 7 to 13) are learning songs, exploring rhythm and musical grammar. They initially learn to sing through imitation. They sing short, often repetitive, phrases that are gradually assembled into a melody and the song is born. Soon comes a day when they help the congregation in praise and prayer.
There is no such thing as non-musical child. Despite the conditions in which we may find ourselves, music will continue to be one of the greatest gifts to humanity, perhaps the greatest. Please speak with Music Director Eugene Sirotkine about your children joining the Choristers or learning an instrument. Call (917)-359-5906 or email music@stmarksteaneck.org.
